There are so many bands out there that became extremely popular for one reason or another. I think some of the biggest bands in the history of music are extremely overrated, even if some of them did contribute something to their genre or music in general. This is merely my opinion of 5 bands that are terribly overrated, and I am sure there are many people that will agree. It is only an opinion though, like I said, and I am curious to see how many people agree with me on this one. I do not necessarily hate every one of these bands, but that does not mean they are not overrated.
5 – U2
They play pretty boring and bland rock and are loved by millions. They have a few good songs but other than it has all been pretty much the same….
4 – Aerosmith
Definitely a classic band but they have become much bigger stars than they really deserve. Typical cookie cutter 80′s hair rock.
3 – Coldplay
To put this simply, these guys are just boring.
2 – Pearl Jam
I am not sure how many albums they have out, but every song sounds pretty much the same as everything else they do. I do not understand why people still like this band. What was up with the fake twitch Eddie used to have when singing, seems he does not do that anymore. Did he realize how foolish it made him look?
1 – KISS
The MOST overrated band ever, all due to a gimmick and Gene Simmons whoring them anywhere he can. The music is boring and the lyrics are stupid or just plain silly.

great post man. i agree 100% with this list…especially the number 1 band. KISS should be called GENE!!! gene simmons is a business tycoon and a marketing genius, and he used the three suckers in the band to help HIM make all the money in the world, pretty pathetic. gene probably knew how horrible of a band they were, but stupid face paint, dumb costumes, and a six foot tongue sells tickets, again, pretty pathetic. the other bands on the list i could do without also, they’re just dull and their music literally puts me to sleep. i’m not saying this just because i listen to metal, all i’m saying is that there are so many other bands that are out there that completely blow every band on this list away. they’ll never be recognized however because they’re original, and not playing the same shit that everyone else does. i do listen to many different genres of music. just not any of these bands…BORING!!!
U2: true, the clock stopped after Pop. But, Bono’s voice though is not over-rated. It’s one of the best pop voices. They had great moments; “with or without you”, “one” are fantastic songs.
Aerosmith: yeah. They made 1 good song “Dream on” and have sucked ever since. Not for lack of individual talent, but the songs are simply bad.
Coldplay: yeah, somewhat overrated. A few very good songs (don’t panic, clocks, yellow) then some ok songs. But you’d think they’re the greatest band of all time. But like U2, lead singer has good voice; that voice is not over-rated. And they have a good sound.
Pearl Jam: I never got it. Very over-rated. Except that they brought Neil Young back. That’s something to be greatful for.
Kiss: Absolutely over-rated. No redeeming quality there. Sucky songs, marketing gimmicks, longue tongue. You say they’re a band? a music band? I thought they were a cirque du soleil mime act…
Hey YA, Im glad you agree.
I do think Bono has a good voice, there is no denying that. Everything else you said in your comments are dead on as well.
you forgot metallica
You are right, they could have easily been on there. The only reason I did not put them on is I think their old stuff was good and they did so much for metal back then. They are overrated for sure though.
I totally agree with this list. However, Metallica should not even be close to being on this list. Whether you like the music or not, you can always count on them to try new things and sounds for their next album. One of the very few bands that actually write what THEY want, and experiment along the way.
Forgot to mention that they put on a VERY good live performance.
Honestly man, I think Metallica are very overrated. None of them are that great on their instruments, the 2 best musicians that they ever had in the band were Cliff Burton and Dave Mustaine. I do love Metallica up to And Justice but even then they were terribly overrated.

I have to agree on U2. I would add in there REM whose sound is carefully calibrated to win the bland Olympics.
I absolutely agree with kiss being the most overrated band. The Beatles are in no way overrrated. They were awesome vocalists and instrumentalists, not to mention writers, and they revolutionized music. No band can touch their number of #1 hits both in the UK and USA.
Gotta agree regarding Coldplay, Pearl Jam, and, especially, Kiss. Chris Martin of Coldplay makes me want to find him on a beach and kick sand in his face, and I’m NOT that kind of person. What a whiney, angst ridden, emo wimp.
I just watched Pearl Jam on Austin City Limits and I thought it was the WORST ACL in the show’s 35 years. Well, actually, I only watched about 20 minutes of the show before I couldn’t stand any more. Boring, unimaginative noise band. Eddie Vedder’s antics onstage conjured up visions of a drunken, lobotomized ape. What the hell is this band’s appeal?
Kiss? No comment.
I personally think the Beatles are way overrated. I do agree that Market, Floyd, and Queen are not.
Horrendously overrated.. in particular order of awful:
Pearl Jam
Dave Matthews Band
U2
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Aerosmith
you forgot sublime!
Great list!
I wrote top 5 overrated bands list on my blog: http://goodcanadiankid.com/gcks-overrated-bands/ and both KISS and U2 are on it as well. I have to say that the Sex Pistols are the most overrated band ever. Also, I agree that Pearl Jam is overrated, however, I respect the hell out of Eddie Vedder (not a big fan though). That guy loves music…writes and performs constantly – in that sense, he kind of reminds me of Neil Young (both won’t stop until they are dead).
