10 of the Best Drummers in the World

drumsBeing such a music junkie I appreciate musicians who are talented, unique and can play their instruments to a level that many cannot compete with. A good drummer is the real backbone of any good band. In fact, a drummer can make or break a band, especially if the band is one that relies heavily on drums. In my opinion some of the best drummers out there now are deathmetal drummers, and many of the best came from a jazz background. This list is not just deathmetal drummers but some of them are, then the rest come from many different genres of music. There are so many amazing drummers currently playing and this is just a small sample of them, it is not meant to be the 10 best drummers ever. If you enjoy underground metal and other forms of underground music I highly recommend Capital Underground Online Radio.

Mike Portnoy – Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic, Rising Power, OSI, Inner Sanctum, and other misc. projects

Danny Carey – Tool, Pigmy Love Circus, Green Jellÿ, Pigface, and other misc. projects

Tony Royster Jr.(age 12)

Tony Royster Jr.(recent)

Tomas Haake – Meshuggah

Neil Peart – Rush

Romain Goulon – Necrophagist, Disavowed, Agressor, Arsebreed

Flo Mounier – Cryptopsy

Great list… I’d only add one: John Bonham

And did I hear Mike Portney from DreamTheater do the Neil Peart thing with the wood blocks?

2 ShortAttention May 9, 2009 at 9:35 am

Ya, that was actually a Peart solo he does in that vid, awesome.

3 JohnB May 10, 2009 at 11:12 am

Heh. You’ve left out GENERATIONS of great players. What ever happened to Gene Krupa?! That man put out as much music using only 4 drums!

4 Some Dude May 10, 2009 at 11:29 am

You can’t have this list without Bobby Jarzombek. Sorry, you just can’t.

Kudos on Haake though, but if in that case Agren should have made the list too.

5 Ryan May 10, 2009 at 11:35 am

good drummers, but Dave Weckl should take up about 1/2 of the spots

vinnie and gadd should take up the remaining

6 garmonbosia May 10, 2009 at 11:43 am

I’d add Zach Hill of Hella

7 Josh May 10, 2009 at 11:48 am

The list needs Gavin Harrison. Other than that, great selection

8 loo May 10, 2009 at 12:02 pm

What about Stewart Copeland?

9 John Davis May 10, 2009 at 11:08 am

Oh yeah, Neil Peart! Best drummer of ALL time! Rush, “Tom Sawyer” ROCKS!

10 ShortAttention May 10, 2009 at 12:39 pm

I said it is not meant to be “The 10 Best Drummers”, but just a sample of 10 of the best “current” drummers. I agree with many that were mentioned as well and they are among some of the best. These are not all “rock drummers” as someone stated, and the list has nothing to do with who has the fastest doublekick. There are only a couple on the list that play fast double bass.

11 Chris May 10, 2009 at 12:40 pm

You’re missing Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree. On album, he holds back a bit, but just watch what he does on the special features on their live DVD, or pick up any of his two Time Signature Technique DVDs. He’s simply one of the most creative people to ever play drums. Amazing.

12 Gregor May 10, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Buddy Rich needs to be on the list! He was one of the originals and influenced all the current wave of drummers. Peart does a tribute album to him because he was that good. I saw him 3 times in concert and there was and has yet to be anything like him. Stop reading this comment and youtube him!

13 ShortAttention May 10, 2009 at 12:43 pm

I am very familiar with Buddy Rich and he was amazing, but he is not a current drummer and that is why he is not here.

14 ShortAttention May 10, 2009 at 12:43 pm

I agree that Gavin Harrison is awesome, this is just some of the best. I am a big porcupine Tree fan though, check out the previous post.

15 ShortAttention May 10, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Jarzombek is amazing too and he is not here because I could not include everyone and the list is not a “10 best”, only 10 OF the best because there are so many good drummers out there.

16 rob May 10, 2009 at 12:47 pm

What about Carter Beauford? How did he get left off this list?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOatIrazULw

17 peu4000 May 10, 2009 at 12:49 pm

You forgot Brann Dailor of Mastodon fame.

18 Lir May 10, 2009 at 12:58 pm
19 Eric Krieger May 10, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Also add Stewart Copeland.

20 Nick May 10, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Gavin Harrison plays in 19/8

I know Gavin’s already been mentioned, but I feel this video deserves some special attention.

21 James May 10, 2009 at 1:26 pm

What? No Lombardo?

22 Aaron May 10, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Hey man, amazing list, I love watching really great drummers in action.

Let me suggest checking out this guy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF9e2ZVAapE

Seems to just go by the name Vadrum, I think his real name is something like Andre Avaducci. Anyway, I played drums for a long time, and seeing him in action really sort of inspired me to get back to it after I’d lost some of my drive. Great stuff.

All these people you’ve got on your list are amazing as well. Thanks for putting it together.

23 Gage May 10, 2009 at 1:32 pm

John Bonham?

Chris Adler?

24 ShortAttention May 10, 2009 at 1:36 pm

Chris Adler is from Lamb of God who I hate. Their 1st was ok but after their 2nd album it all sounds the same, Burn the priest was much better imo. Bonham ia a great drummer but not on here, like I said this is not a list of “the best” just some of the best.

25 ShortAttention May 10, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Brann Dailor is amazing too, and his kit is awesome and he could have easily been here. Many of the others mentioned could fit as well so thank everyone, I appreciate the feedback. Everyone is taking this wrong though because I am not saying these are the 10 best definitive drummers, just some of them who I really enjoy. I have been a musician for many, many years and there are so many amazing drummers I could have easily done a list of 100, but with a job, family, band, and house to take care of I do not have that much free time.

26 Thomas Jespersen May 10, 2009 at 1:55 pm
27 Marc May 10, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Disregarding the criteria for the list (like so many others), as far a great minimalist goes, I gotta mention Stan Lynch…and on the other end, Keith Moon.

28 greg May 10, 2009 at 2:37 pm

Good list—-I’m glad yo had tomas from Meshuggah because he def deserves to be on the list.

here’s some other great drummers: Dave Lombardo(Slayer/Fantomas), Lord Marco(Braindrill) & Brann(Mastodon)

29 D.A.R.E. May 10, 2009 at 2:49 pm

No Josh Freeze?!?!?!?

30 noizfx May 10, 2009 at 2:56 pm

One of my favorites is definitely Brann Dailor from the band Mastodon, who also has a jazz feel to his drumming.

31 galacticlove May 10, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Wow you should have expanded this list to about 20 guys I think..

I was shocked not to see Bill Bruford, Billy Cobham, Carl Palmer, Chester Thompson, and yes Dave Weckl. It’s been a real honor and pleasure for me to see all of these guys in action at one time or another.

32 Earritation May 10, 2009 at 2:59 pm

i don´t argue, but
their teachers are better

33 Scott May 10, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Hey man, great picks for your list. There are a lot of good drummers on here that I really enjoy. I also have a few recommendations in case you’re not familiar with their work. Whether they deserve to be on your NEXT list is up to you.

Stevie Wonder – I know he’s not known as a drummer and he hasn’t played recently, but check out some of his videos on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBA4vWQRBA0

Gene Hoglan – Strapping Young Lad, Dethklok, Zimmer’s Hole, Death and famed session drummer. This guy is just sick. He’s like 500lbs and is 6’6″ tall but he’s one of the fastest, most technically saavy drummers out there.

Ed Warby – An excellent Progressive Metal drummer who’s best known for his work in the ensemble band Ayreon. He uses a small kit and he can do stuff that other drummers can’t even think of.

34 Casper May 10, 2009 at 3:10 pm

So, I figure i would chime in with acouple extra current drummers.

Thomas Pridgen = greatest current drummer.

And let’s not forget who Pridgen replaced….

Jon “fuckin” Theodore.

Viva la Volta!

35 matt May 10, 2009 at 3:10 pm

WHERE is marco minnemann? (the newer Necrophagist drummer) he is probably #2 only to Tony Royster jr.
good list anyway

36 Jeff May 10, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Where is MIKE MANGINI!????????

37 ShortAttention May 10, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Thank for all the others everyone has chimed in with, I do not disagree with any. I am a huge fan of all the drummers you mentioned as well Greg, Braindrill are sick. Funny you mentioned them because I am wearing a Braindrill shirt as I type this. Thanks again everyone, I could have easily added many more.

38 dopefish May 10, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Just a heads up, one of the drummers is listed as “Flo Mounier – Cyptopsy” however the band is called Cryptopsy!

Just wanted to make sure people can track down an awesome band to listen to.

39 Neil May 10, 2009 at 6:01 pm

This list is incomplete without Shivamani from India

40 phil May 10, 2009 at 6:43 pm

You forgot Jon Karel from The Number 12 Looks Like You and HORSE the band. Here’s some weird drumming goodness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76cQipnReoM

41 Sam H. May 10, 2009 at 7:11 pm

This list is FAR too tilted toward heavy metal drummers. They’re generally skilled technically, but at the same time rely too heavily on speed and theatrics over anything else. There’s much more to being a good drummer than being able to play quickly in odd time signatures.

42 ShortAttention May 10, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Hey man thanks for the heads up on my typo, I cannot believe I did that and did not catch it as I am a longtime Cryptopsy fan. I hate the last album though!

43 MARS May 10, 2009 at 10:27 pm

SORRY, BUT PEART DOES NOT BELONG THERE. AND JUST CUZ METAL DRUMMERS CAN DO DOUBLE KICKS AT INCREDIBLE SPEEDS DOES NOT MAKE THEM TOP 10 MATERIAL.
I WOULD EASILY TAKE THREE OF THESE DRUMMERS OUT AND REPLACE THEM WITH:
-DAVE WECKL
-BUDDY RICH
-CARTER BEAUFORD

44 jason May 10, 2009 at 10:46 pm
45 Ktressel May 10, 2009 at 10:55 pm

I can’t believe Carter Beauford (DMB) wasn’t on this list! He is by far on of the sickest drummers on stage right now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84UoUPcvQCs

That youtube video is just a small testament to who he is… Search Carter Beauford and you will see nothing but sick videos…

46 scribby May 10, 2009 at 11:17 pm

Richard Christy is currently making prank calls for a living, not drumming, so I don’t think he qualifies for this list. Funny pick though.

47 Yoyo May 10, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Imo Joey Jordison should have been up there.

I am partial to Mr. Deitch…

Adam Deitch, a drummer and producer, is best known as the drummer of the John Scofield Band.

He has played with the Average White Band and Lettuce, and he’s sat in with dozens of Jazz, Jam Band, and Hip hop groups, both in the studio and at live performances.

His drumming style is very funk oriented, and he plays some very unusual fills. In John Scofield’s words, “He’s got that jazz mentality and a ‘take no prisoners’ type of creativity – all combined with the groove of death.” He has produced music for 50 Cent, Talib kweli and RedMan as well as for the popular MTV and VH1 TV shows G’s to Gents and Gotti’s Way.

He HAS PRODUCED: 50 Cent (off the album Curtis…My Gun Go Off), Redman(3 tracks off of Red Gone Wild), Keisha Cole, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake*, Xzibit(Scandelous Bitches), Talib Kweli( off the album Eardrum…The Nature), Chaka Khan, J-Live, Jean Grae, El da Sensei, Immortal Technique*, Idris Muhammed*, Soulive, CX*, O.C., KRS-One*, GZA, Jah Dan*, LDJ (Big Mike Official Mixtape), Blam, Saigon*, Wordsworth, Shae Fiol*, Chali Tuna (Jurassic 5)*, Lettuce and Daniel Beddingfield (* yet to be released)

HAS PERFORMED OR RECORDED WITH AS DRUMMER: The Game, Justin Timberlake, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Lettuce, The John Scofield Band, Fred Wesley (J.B’s), Fats Domino, Olu Dara, Toots(Maytals) Raphael Saadiq, The Fugees, “Ms.(Lauryn)Hill”, D.J.Quick (DVD Live at H.O.B. in L.A., Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), Chris Martin (Cold Play), Macy Gray, Dave Mathews, Trey Anastasio,Mike Gordon, Soulive, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, THE Average White Band (AWB DVD Greatest Hits live at H.O.B. LA), Bernie Worrell (P-Funk), The GZA, Raekwon the Chef (Wu-Tang), John Medeski (MMW), Christian Mcbride, Oteil Burbridge(Allman Bros.), Meshell N’degeocello, Roy Hargrove, Rahzel (The Roots), Dice Raw, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Larry Coryell, Donald Harrison, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter, Josh Redman, Sonya Kitchell, Big Sam, Trombone shorty, Vernon Reid(Living Colour), D.J. Logic, Marco Benevento, Greg Nice (Nice n Smooth), The Beatnuts, (Mad)Skillz, Black Thought (The Roots), Wyclef Jean, Shakira, Praswell, Roc Raida (X-Ecutioners), Jeru tha Damaja, Afu-Ra, Sy Smith, Javier, Rocco Prestia(T.O.P.), Dead Prez, Buckshot Shorty (Black Moon) and Keith Murray

51 Brad T. May 11, 2009 at 1:59 am

Jojo Mayer and Steve Smith!!!!

Dennis Chambers, Dave Weckl, and Vincent Colaiuta are others at the top of the heap!

52 Juha May 11, 2009 at 3:26 am
53 kaciara May 11, 2009 at 9:19 am
54 Chris May 11, 2009 at 9:56 am

Where is Carter Beauford on this list?????

55 JKirkwood May 11, 2009 at 11:17 am

Mars, you shouldnt be allowed to have a voice on this. Neil Peart has single handedly inspired more drummers than anyone else except Buddy Rich. And if you knew anything about Neil Pearts history, you’d know its amazing that he still plays music at all.

56 ShortAttention May 11, 2009 at 11:54 am

Carter Beauford is not on the list! He is an excellent drummer but not on this list. This is not “The 10 Best” it is only “10 OF the best”. More people should actually read the title or the content before commenting.

57 Pod May 11, 2009 at 12:55 pm

Hello? Anyone heard of Virgil Donati please? Amazingly skilled drummer.

Good drummers on the list but many left out.

58 Matt May 11, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Understanding that this is 10 OF the best, not the 10 best, in regards to drummers like weckl and beauford. Why does your list have so many metal drummers and not someone with the talent that those two have? Not to nitpick your list, but maybe you could explain how you came to the conclusion that speed metal drummers so prominent in your list of 10 OF the best.

59 Preble May 11, 2009 at 4:44 pm

What about Hal Darling? He is just as good as any of these guys.

60 Darren Leary May 11, 2009 at 5:05 pm

I agree with Josh, other than Gavin Harrison, good list. Needs Gavin!!!!

61 ShortAttention May 11, 2009 at 5:39 pm

He could have been on here for sure, he is awesome I totally agree. I am a huge fan of PT, just look 2 posts back on the site.

62 justyn saunders May 11, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Hey,amazing list man. I noticed that a couple of people made some closed-minded comments about certain drummers on this page. One of which, is the comment about Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy. Those guys are simply paying homage to their MAIN INFLUENCES! I see nothing wrong with that, maybe you cant play anything remotely close to what they can because you’re musically retarded, or you listen to rap or something, I dont know. They are the 2 best drummers in their respective genres, hands down!
Also, to the guy who left the comment about Tomas Haake not being a good drummer…get the jizz out of your ears man. That guy is amazing, and a pioneer and innovator in the math-metal world. Are you that ignorant??? I understand everyone has an opinion(although, some people really shouldn’t), but those of you who obviously have no understanding about good musicians, SHOULD JUST KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELVES BECAUSE, AGAIN, YOU ARE MUSICALLY RETARDED!!! You people probably think Lars Ulrich or they guy from friggin Hootie and the Blowfish are good drummers! And if there are any of you out there who dont think I know what I’m talking about…fine, but I’ve been playing drums for about 20 years now, and I’m into all kinds of music ranging from classical, to jazz, to progressive music, to grindcore and death metal (oh yeah and I can play the music too!!!) so i have a pretty good idea about what’s good and not good in the music scene. I’m done ranting so I’m gonna go now. Anyone who has any objections to my rant please let me know. I love a good argument(especially with stupid people!!!) Later…

63 ShortAttention May 12, 2009 at 11:21 am

Richard Christy still plays doing studio stuff and guest appearances, so yes he does qualify.

64 jj May 12, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Far from current, but the drummer for Nazz was astounding.
(late 60′s, with Todd Rungren)

65 ShortAttention May 12, 2009 at 5:46 pm

If you plan on leaving an ignorant comment then do not bother because it will just be deleted. If you don’t like the list then that is fine but I am not going to approve stupid comments like the moron who said “Neil Peart is one of the worst drummers ever”. That is an ignorant comment from someone who obviously knows nothing about music, and it was deleted.

I have no problem with people adding to the list but if you are gonna say something dumb you are better off going into your garage and sucking on your tailpipe.

66 Salz May 13, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Great drummers all, but Virgil Donati would eat most of them alive…

67 Your Lead Guitarist May 15, 2009 at 4:08 am

I’m not gonna pretend to know shit about drumming, but when you said you were gonna make this list, I knew 3 things right away:

1. People were gonna chime in with their own ideas about who else should be on the list (Which makes it a good thing that you already told me that you’re planning on making another one very soon. Hopefully not before you get done with that “10 Of The Best GUITARISTS” list, though…). Which isn’t a bad thing at all, as long as people don’t freak out about it and yell at you for not including their favorites. Oh, and kudos to the dude who mentioned Stevie Wonder, but obviously he hasn’t checked out the rest of this site, because there was already a Stevie Wonder drum video on here months before you compiled this list.

2. People were gonna give you crap about the guys you picked for the list. You know how much I hate it when people start insulting great musicians just to make themselves feel better. But when you told me that people on here were bashing Peart and Haake, I honestly thought you were exxagerating a bit. But now I feel very let down by my fellow music and drumming fans. People who chime in with suggestions for the next list are okay, but those who feel the need to hurl insults should know that these men are on this list for good reasons. They are all highly skilled, innovative, and passionate about what they do, and they’re not just a bunch of “speed metal drummers”. I mean, seriously, did you guys even watch the Royster videos? And since when is Rush speed metal?

3. Lastly, I knew that at some point, Justyn wasn’t gonna be able to keep quiet. That much BS in the comments, and you know he’s just gonna chime in and just flip out on everyone! KUDOS TO YOU, COUSIN!

I love this list, I wouldn’t change anything about it, and I look forward to the next one, and the next one, and the next one…

-Roy

68 The Music Elitist May 20, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Where are John Bonham, Keith Moon & Stewart Copeland

69 The Music Elitist May 20, 2009 at 6:12 pm

I also noticed a common thread with this list….massively unnecessary amounts of drums. Bigger drum set doesn’t necessarily mean better drummer.

70 ShortAttention May 20, 2009 at 8:35 pm

I know a bigger kit does not make a better drummer, I have grown up around music and played music for years as well. The list is only current drummers, and it is not meant to be the best definitively, just some. Any one of these guys can play anything, I have heard them all doing many different styles of music.

71 Sol May 21, 2009 at 2:06 am

Great list. personally, I’d put John Bonham on here. Otherwise, awesome

72 Your Lead Guitarist May 24, 2009 at 5:10 am

To “The Music Elitist”:

” I would say that on any given night, during a show, I probably use 98% of the pieces in my kit.”

- Mike Portnoy, Dream Theater. Pretty much the guy with the biggest kits out there, him and Peart anyways.

Please remember, to these guys, and really to every truly great drummer that’s ever sat behind a kit, drums are truly an INSTRUMENT, an outlet for creative expression. Each piece on the kit is just another tool for that creative expression. So really, usually, the more pieces a PROFESSIONAL drummer has in his kit, the more expressive, unique, and technically profound his or her drumming is. Either that, or they just like wasting money on drums. So, do you see anyone on this list wasting a single piece on any of their kits? They play what they need to to create the music they want to. It’s that simple!

73 Thom May 30, 2009 at 10:49 pm

I’d add Gavin Harrison and Steve Gadd for sure. But… old school Bill Bruford(Yes and King Crimson), Carl Palmer (ELP) were pretty da$n close. Right this second though, nobody is better than Harrion. I saw him last summer in Nashville with King Crimson – words escape me – he was that good.

74 jra June 1, 2009 at 12:01 am

good list..im glad i saw neil peart on there….he in my opinion is the best drummer ever and whoever bashes him is an idiot

75 Hempmonkey June 3, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Good list, and I like someone who makes a list and jumps in on the discussion.
My pick not on the list: Abe Laboriel Jr.

76 Cloudchaser June 4, 2009 at 3:46 am

WTF is Rick Allen and Robert Sweet?

77 Michael June 4, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Chester Thompson, Neil Peart, Russel Batiste, Vinnie Coliutou (Help me with spelling please), DJ Bonebreak ( from X ), All the other drummers who played with Frank Zappa, Bill Bruford, Pat Mastelotto,

78 Tom June 9, 2009 at 3:59 pm

This is a great list. All of the drummers that came to mind, especially Royster

79 Mahmoud abdel fattah June 19, 2009 at 3:12 pm

tony royster u are f****** amazing
wen ur young and old

80 Jon June 25, 2009 at 9:43 pm

I think Neil Peart is amazing but they don’t have Joey Jordanson on there and now that dude is gettin close to Neil he just needs to practice for about 2 years and study after him and he will be tied with Neil because I have been taking lessons for 8 years watching Neil and I have learned a lot and now i might be getting a record deal after i turn 18

81 ShortAttention July 6, 2009 at 10:03 am

Dude, you cannot even spell his name right. It is Joey Jordison, formally of Anal Blast before Shitknot.

82 othniel gaglo August 1, 2009 at 12:34 pm

83 Lars Ulrich August 19, 2009 at 12:42 am

To othniel gaglo, hehehehe

84 Lorraine McDonnell September 27, 2009 at 2:33 am

Dominic Howard, MUSE…he is 2009.

85 James October 27, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Bout time someone made a list with Portnoy on it. He is by far the best current drummer. Skill wise no one matches Dream Theater

86 Coordination Madness (Aditmad) November 3, 2009 at 11:49 pm

Why no body talks about THOMAS LANG. Or just because he’s not so popular in the world?

I’ve just not heard,
but played the playing style all of these drummers that you mentioned. (These Drummers have no special ability)

M.Portnoy, Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, Gavin Harrison, Jarzombek, Carter Beauford, Brann Dailor, Stewart Copeland, George Kollias, J.bonham, joey.jordison, Carl Palmer, ETC. (I’ve played these guys drumming style, and I can’t find any difficulty, because most of them just ‘speed priority’ drummer)

But this guy, THOMAS LANG! Damn!(I’m like a stupid guy when I try his playing style).
He’s coordination playing style drummer, that insist brain to think multidimensionally, MIKE MANGINI is drummer with this playing style too, but not as good as THOMAS LANG. That Video of THOMAS LANG on youtube is not so amazing.. (not his best)
Try watch another video of him.

Before I watch him, I was big fan of M.Portnoy, Neil peart, J. jordison,ETC,ETC. (All of drummers that U mentioned)
But now, I’M NOT!!!!!!!! Now I’m ‘student’ of THOMAS LANG, the one n only
I have new principe, “If U plays speed U’ll get no Coordination play, if U Learn coordination play, automatically U got speed”

87 Coordination Madness (Aditmad) November 4, 2009 at 12:02 am

@ Pod: I AGree with you, buddy! VIRGIL DONATI is fine! Double strokes on both of his feet, just like my ‘master THOMAS LANG’.

88 Super prik November 19, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Joey jordison why isn’t he on there

89 Dave November 21, 2009 at 12:40 am

Darren King of Mute Math is def. one of the best right now.

90 ShortAttention November 22, 2009 at 8:47 am

Because his band sucks.

91 Drummaster88 November 23, 2009 at 12:13 am

Great list of players from everyone!
I don’t think you can loop all these drummers into one pot, and pick the best!
I say this because the genres are worlds apart. Portnoy can’t play free flowing
jazz and fusion, just as Royster can’t play the heavy stuff as Portnoy.

I watched all the videos and being a drummer of 20+ years myself, I thought it was
pretty funny to see the 12 year old kid kick the living shit out of just about everyone else!
All I could say was WOW!

I only heard his name mentioned once, so I’ll bring him out again.
Drum Roll please…………
In my opinion the best SELF taught drummer in the world ..DENNIS CHAMBERS
The drummer with the best feel in the business……..STEVE GADD

This is just my opinion of course!

To the guy that didn’t like Peart….WTF???????
Not only is he a great drummer, the guy is a genius!
He wrote just about every song Rush ever produced!

I love all you crazy flippin drummers!!!!! Enough said!

92 Lord Xenu December 15, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Am I the only person to notice that Joey Jordison isn’t even mentioned? He’s an amazing drummer and he’s a current one. In fact pretty much everybody in Slipknot has talent. Even if you don’t like their music, you can’t deny that they’ve got skills. Just saying.

93 ShortAttention December 20, 2009 at 6:37 am

He does nothing amazing on drums at all, Jordison and Ulrich are the 2 most overrated drummers ever.

94 Ryan W December 21, 2009 at 6:54 pm

What about Blake Richardson? An up and coming drummer for Between the Buried and Me. They just came out with a new concept album after the success of their previous one. Colors was an amazing accomplishment and The Great Misdirect an even better one. It’s a metal band yes, but not generic in the least. There isn’t an annoyance of constant double kick or cymbols. Everything is done creatively and perfectly. This man’s sense of time and versatility is incredible. I can’t believe you haven’t heard of him. He’s one of the best drummers out right now. The band itself playing every style imaginable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snGxAUBMZHY
He fits the criteria perfectly. Simply amazing.

95 ShortAttention December 21, 2009 at 7:22 pm

I love BTBAM, I just didn’t consider him when I did this post. I have been a fan of them from their first album, and I was into Prayer for Cleansing before BTBAM, BTBAM spawned from Prayer for Cleansing.

96 Huff January 3, 2010 at 3:10 am

Dave Grohl?

97 skinniesvocals January 14, 2010 at 2:03 pm

98 skinniesvocals January 14, 2010 at 2:08 pm

fall out boy, blink-182, all time low, part deux tour, travis barker was still not 100% in his left arm, he was playing everything hes ever played with one arm, no mistakes

99 ELFAN WAROUW January 25, 2010 at 10:06 am

100 Eddgy January 25, 2010 at 5:03 pm
101 Captain February 3, 2010 at 11:57 pm

Thomas Pridgen?? he’s good enough to make that list.

102 ShortAttention February 6, 2010 at 8:00 pm

He is easily good enough to make the list, but I could only do so many. I agree though, he is one of the best.

103 Elisabetta26 February 10, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Different people that would like to have high grades look for a trustworthy essay writing service to purchase their term paper titles at. The same things we do too.

Edit by SAS: Elisabetta go somewhere else, this link is totally irrelevant to this post so I dont know why you would even bother because it will do nothing for the target site.. Instead of keeping it as spam I figured i would allow it through just so I could comment on it.

104 Michel Mercier February 13, 2010 at 12:21 pm

HAHAHA if this doesn’t include Yoshiki Hayashi in the top 3 this is clearly biased towards white drummers hahahaha

105 ShortAttention February 20, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Look closer dipshit, there are non white drummers on the list.

106 adam March 15, 2010 at 12:25 am

107 www.oem4r.co.cc March 15, 2010 at 10:21 am

He is the best drummer ever in the world. because he played drums consistent from beginning to end.

108 Anonymous March 16, 2010 at 8:35 pm

approve

109 Anonymous March 17, 2010 at 9:37 am

Ya, he was good when he was alive. This is a list of living drummers, it says so even in the content before the videos.

110 Anonymous March 25, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Jojo Mayer?

111 ben April 6, 2010 at 7:22 am

TRÈ COOL!!

112 Anonymous May 11, 2010 at 9:32 pm

What about travis barker he is awesome

113 neoblaste of madagascar May 21, 2010 at 7:10 am

In my opinion, one of the best drummers in the world could be JOEY of Slipknot. Because of his agressivity and speciality to play drum. Who are in the same arguments with me?

114 Anonymous May 21, 2010 at 9:44 am

joey jordison is the best drummer ever

115 Anonymous May 26, 2010 at 5:12 pm

All of these guys are good…
Espiacially Tony Royster Jr.
He is gonna be rich when he grows up!
But I still like The Beatles drummer, Ringo Starr, a bit more better.

116 Anonymous May 29, 2010 at 8:53 pm

forgot the one off slipknot!!

117 Anonymous June 8, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Wrong. He was just a thumper

119 Anonymous June 24, 2010 at 6:36 pm

120 Ryan June 26, 2010 at 8:48 am

125 Tomaca February 3, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Daryl Hayott

Brazilian born- American raised
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daryl_hayott

Also ranked in the top 50 bassists in the world.
Plays NINE different instruments and all of them well.

There can’t be any list without him on it… : )

126 YOUR MOM February 22, 2011 at 6:20 pm

Where’s the rev, mike portnoy, buddy rich. Like, not even close to the top 10

127 ShortAttention February 27, 2011 at 9:45 pm

First off, it is current(living) drummers, and Portnoy is on the list. Buddy Rich is not current and The Rev is also dead and was overrated anyways plus played in a shitty band.

128 SwingFreak March 6, 2011 at 9:46 pm

I think the 3 best on hear were Tony Royster Jr., Romain Goulon, & Flo Mounier. And the best of those is Royster. I say this because he’s got that confounded swing! He must of studied Buddy Rich big time. Buddy had more of it though, that swing flow rhythm style. Really profound in my opinion. Who else has that kind of style??

129 THE DUDE March 24, 2011 at 12:13 pm

You cant have this list without TRAVIS BARKER C’MON WHAT KINDA LIST IS THIS WITHOUT THE BEST PUNK DRUMMER EVER

130 eX March 29, 2011 at 5:38 pm

I heard every notable band had a great drummer for the past 60 years, but if I had to look for the best one I’d have to stick with mr. Haake. He was the only one I’ve seen so far who could play 2 tracks at the same time, as if he had 2 heads each playin’ one rhythm, that’s sick imo. Even as a DJ I know it’s hard to sync 2 different BPM tracks in your head, let alone be able to play them live.

131 cristobal May 19, 2011 at 10:53 pm

and travis barker

132 Shawn May 25, 2011 at 10:36 am

He is good even though Blink 182 sucked, but I still wouldnt include him in a Top 10 or 20. Definitely in the Top 30 though.

133 Preacher July 2, 2011 at 6:07 pm

Finally someone does some list made with the brain and not with the ass…Peart, Bonzo are overrated…Mike P a little overrated but hes still awesome….And T. Barker, Ringo and Cobus are SHIT….They say theyre groove drummers groove drummers are John Blackwell, Sugarfoot, Porcaro, Blackwell, and sissy guys who are cool players like Adam Bitch and Shawn Pelton….And by the way Mangini should be the Mike in this list and some other here and there like the VIRG and Tommy L (Lang…hehehehe gotcha…Lee hell no)…Travis is like the 200 th bets drummer if you count each and every drummer whos not famous..Hes like the 90th Best famous drummer….He cant use a fucking double pedal (not for metal..it would be cool at punk)…AND BTW Marky Ramone and Brandon Barnes are the Best

134 Sorry July 4, 2011 at 6:29 am

The King of drummers – **TRAVIS BARKER** of the band “Blink 182″ He’s the real “God of Drum”..!! xD xD Watch this video……

135 nazmi August 9, 2011 at 10:03 pm

hey…whers jimmy sullivan(the rev)???

136 Shawn August 19, 2011 at 7:53 am

What do you mean where is he? He is dead. The list is drummers that are alive, and he was very over rated in my opinion anyways, just like A7X.

137 Paul October 20, 2011 at 6:27 am

I bet you wish you’d never started this now don’t you? Good list. I agree that these are ten of the best drummers and most importantly I get your point. Maybe everybody else should spend time getting together lists of best dead, best white and best sh*t drummers instead of putting meaningless comments on here!

138 Shawn October 20, 2011 at 2:23 pm

Thank you man, Im glad some people get it, lol. I would never make a definitive list because it is impossible since it is all ones own opinion.

139 Maggot 21 November 17, 2011 at 4:57 pm

What about Christopher Shcnieder from Rammstein and Joey Jordison from slipknot man?!!They are awesome drummers and you must have just forgotten about them?!

140 Stuart Beven December 1, 2011 at 6:31 am

WHERE THE FUCK IS JOEY JORDISON?!?!?!?!?!

141 chris December 24, 2011 at 12:14 am

no Travis Barker?

142 Steve Wilson January 28, 2012 at 5:07 pm

There are thousands of unreal drummers today and they keep getting better and better. What about this young guy from New Zealand… Dylan Elise? There are You Tube videos on line of him when he was only 15. And, I am sorry… but even then, I truly believe he could kick all of the asses mentioned on this post, even that of my fave, Neil Peart.

When Tony Royster Jr was only 12… he was better than most of the big names of today, who are… not 12. He could be better than Elise… hard to say, since they are BOTH so friggin’ good. And, young.

Steve
